Termite Control

There are a wide range of different termite control products available on the market today. Which products that can be obtained in your particular area can depend on several different factors, such as regional legislation, which type of termites that are most common in your area and which companies that produce products for your part of the world.

Termite control products

The vast majority of the available termite control products can be divided into two broad categories: termite control baits and termite control liquids. Termite control baits are disguised as food and will kill the termite colony over time. Termite control liquids are chiefly used to prevent termite attacks and are applied to the soil around a house. They can however also be used to kill termites that are already inside a home, since poisoned soil will make it impossible for the termites to leave the house.

Termite control baits

Termite control baits are usually made from paper or cardboard, since termites feed on cellulose. Poison or other substances detrimental to the termites are mixed into the bait. Earlier, toxins such as arsenic trioxide were common in termite control baits but today most manufacturers prefer substances that are less dangerous to humans, such as disruptive insect hormones. Dusting termite tunnels with arsenic compounds is another traditional method that is uncommon today.

Termite control bait ingredients

When it comes to termite control baits, it is of imperative importance that the active ingredient is slow-working. A quick acting active ingredient will kill the worker termites too fast, before they have a chance to carry the food back to the termite colony and share it with termites living within the colony. A proper, slow-working ingredient will cause a gradual decline of the entire termite colony.

Termite control bait safety

Termite control baits are typically placed outdoors near the house or below ground in plastic boxes. Termite control baits can also be placed around visible termite mud tubes. Even though termite control baits have become less dangerous to non-insects during the last few decades, you should naturally always keep children and pets away from the termite control baits. It is also very important to always follow the safety instructions when using termite control baits.

Termite control liquids

As explained above, termite control liquids are primarily used to discourage termites that try to access your home via the soil. It can however also kill termites that live inside the house, since they will be unable to leave the house. Termite control liquids are typically used as preventive measures, but can also be combined with termite control baits in order to vanquish existing termite infestations.

Termite control liquids are applied to the soil that surrounds your building and will form a chemical barrier. Traditional termite control liquids will usually work only as repellents, while some of the more modern termite control liquids will actually kill any termite that tries to forage through the soil around your home. Modern termite control liquids can for instance contain imidacloprid, chlorfenapyr or fipronil
